Auria’s APS Selected for Evaluation in Johns Hopkins APL’s Cislunar Testbed

August 11, 2025

Colorado Springs, CO (August 11, 2025) Auria, a leading provider of Space Operations, Space Domain Awareness, and Space Test & Training solutions and software for federal, international, and commercial customers, is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a contract to support the integration of our Autonomous Planning System (APS) autonomous onboard planning solution into the Cislunar Testbed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

APS will be used onboard to autonomously plan and deconflict multiple competing operator-defined mission objectives including managing power, imaging the lunar surface using SSA sensors to maintain cislunar orbital regime awareness, planning spacecraft communication, orchestrating data processing activities, and ensuring that all mission safety constraints are maintained (e.g. protecting sensitive sensor optics from bright objects and maintaining thermal stability of bus hardware components).

APS will be deployed onto APL’s flight-like computers, which are integrated with a cislunar simulation environment to allow for highly realistic spacecraft and mission configurations to be explored and evaluated. Transition toward flight readiness within the Testbed may lead to opportunities for inclusion on upcoming APL missions. The goal of APL’s Cislunar Testbed is to advance U.S. interests in the cislunar domain by increasing the technology readiness level (TRL) of solutions such as APS.

APS is a powerful technology for autonomous planning across domains, with the breadth of its applications demonstrating its exceptional flexibility. Auria has utilized APS for the autonomous operation of heterogeneous constellations of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with DARPA, autonomous local domain awareness and satellite mission safety assurance in AFRL’s SaFIRE program, and heterogeneous teams of unmanned underwater/surface/aerial vehicles (UUVs/USVs/UAVs) with the Navy. For NASA, APS has been applied to heterogeneous swarms of rovers, satellites, and atmospheric vehicles for robotic Mars exploration, heterogeneous robotic swarms with astronauts-in-the-loop for lunar exploration, and mission-adaptive formation flying control of satellite clusters.
